Being the business the assistant names out loud.

Work aimed at getting your business cited inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews — where an answer is given rather than a page of ten blue links.

The problem

A growing share of searches now end without a click.

When somebody asks an assistant which supplier to use, the answer is assembled from a handful of sources the model considers reliable. Either you are among them or you are not. There is no second page to be on.

This is often sold as answer engine optimisation or generative engine optimisation, usually with a great deal of certainty attached. The honest position is that it draws on the same foundations as search — clear entities, credible sources, retrievable content — applied for a reader that summarises rather than links.

The practical job is to make your business easy to identify, easy to quote, and consistent everywhere a model might check.

What we take over

  • Entity clarity — who you are, where you operate, what you sell, stated unambiguously
  • Structured data: Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, Service and FAQ schema
  • An llms.txt file and sensible crawler directives for AI user agents
  • Citation-worthy pages: definitions, comparisons, pricing explanations, specifications
  • Content restructured into passages that survive being extracted and quoted
  • Consistency of name, address and claims across the sites models read
  • Third-party presence — directories, trade bodies, review platforms, editorial coverage
  • Prompt-level monitoring of how assistants currently answer for your category
  • Author and organisation signals that support E-E-A-T

Where AI does the work

Applied to the measuring, not to the claiming.

Every AI process below is reviewed by your specialist before anything is published.

Citation monitoring

A defined set of buying-intent prompts is run against the major assistants on a schedule, recording whether you appear, which source was cited, and who was named instead.

Passage testing

Draft content is tested for how cleanly it can be retrieved and summarised, so key facts sit in a single self-contained passage rather than spread across a page.

Entity reconciliation

Public mentions of your business are gathered and compared, surfacing contradictions in name, address, service area or claims that make a model less confident about citing you.

A note on automation: Assistants do not publish a ranking system, and their answers vary between users and sessions. We report what we can observe across repeated tests. Anyone presenting a fixed position for an AI assistant is describing one sample, not a rank.

How it runs

The first ninety days.

  1. Baseline

We build a prompt set that reflects how customers actually describe their problem, run it across the major assistants, and record what is being said about your category and who is being cited.

  2. Make the site readable

Structured data, entity definitions, crawler access for AI user agents and an llms.txt file are put in place, alongside the technical fixes that stop content being retrieved at all.

  3. Publish citable material

Pages are written to answer the questions in the prompt set directly — clear definitions, honest comparisons, real specifications — in a structure that can be quoted without distortion.

  4. Build corroboration

The same facts are reinforced off-site through directories, trade listings, review platforms and editorial coverage. We re-run the prompt set monthly and report what changed.

Worth knowing

This is a young discipline, and we treat it as one.

The mechanisms behind AI answers change without notice and are not documented by the companies that run them. What we can commit to is method: a stable prompt set, repeated measurement, and changes grounded in what we observe rather than in what is fashionable.

It is also not a replacement for search. Assistants draw heavily on conventional web content and on the same signals of credibility, so a site with weak technical foundations rarely gets cited. If that is your situation, we will say so and start there. SEO, the Google Business Profile and the content behind both are run by the same team, so starting there does not mean starting again with another agency.
